Al Hirt had a song called "Cotton Candy."
The Jelly Beans sang, "I Wanna Love Him So Bad." They also remade "Doo Wah Diddy" before Manfred Mann redid the song.
As for uncommon instruments. The Rascals used an accordian in, "How Can I Be Sure." There were bag pipes in "Mull Of Kintyre" by Paul McCartney. Also "Sky Pilot" by The Animals. Rolf Harris had one song where he played an obscure Australian instrument. There was a song called "Twitchy" in 1957 where a unitar was played.
