More precisely, before the advent of dial phones, telephone exchanges had names in large cities. You had to tell the operator something like, "Please dial Beechwood 5789". When dial plones came in, the exchanges retained the names and used the first two letters for dialing. That's why roatry phones had letters ans well as numbers/
