CKLW is assigned to 800 kHz.
If their transmitter in on, but with just silence, dead air, it would only be on 800 kHz.
But the sound we hear covers the span between 790 and 810. Bass sounds are close to the carrier, 800.
The highs spread out over the full band, 790 - 810.
A typical antenna system is optimized for their carrier, 800, but not necessarily over the full band. This can compromise the sound.
From what I read, CKLW's system was optimized for the full band, and as a result, transmitted full quality sound. I noticed it here in CT as a kid!
