I know that in the 1970's, WCBS-FM selected music from a "pie chart." I re-created a 1976 pie chart from logs of their music and posted it to the WCBS-FM nostalgia page on facebook. Back in the 1970's WCBS-FM played two current top 40 songs every hour. Each at the quarter hour. The music they played was not random. It conformed to a format based on catagory.
